By David PorterYou alone are responsible for the news you consume. If I have only a few moments of your time, that’s the message I want to drive home.
You can talk about bias in the media, shortcomings among news staffs, fragmentation of audience, conspiracy theories and the boogey man, but at the end of the day, it’s nobody else’s responsibility to decide for you what is true, what is propaganda and what is opinion. You alone are responsible for the news you consume.

To honor rural journalists of courage, integrity and tenacity
Recognizing exemplary rural journalists, providing examples for others to follow, is part of the mission of the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues. As part of that effort, the Institute presents an award in honor of Tom and Pat Gish, right, who published The Mountain Eagle in Whitesburg, Ky., for more than 51 years. Tom died in November 2008; Pat has health issues but remains publisher, and their son Ben is editor.
